News Flash

Venues (1/4): We get the news that Wiseacres comedy club has closed and will not be reopening.

Venues (12/19): After a few months of operation, the Montgomery Drafthouse is closing. Arlington remains open. In other news, there's a new open mic on Tuesdays in 2009, at a place called Dahlak (thanks to Aparna for the tip).

No News is No News (12/8): Nothing sexy to report. Theater shows have just about disappeared (whether it's seasonal or economy-related remains to be seen). We have the usual run of open mics and that sort of thing, so always check out those listings. Plus, if you have anything you'd like featured on the calendar page, feel free to pass it along.

College Contest (12/8): Gears are in motion for the sixth annual DC Improv college competition. It's a series of showcases at local campuses, followed by the finals at the DC Improv in the spring. If you're a college student with the comedy bug, click on over and read up. It beats studying for finals.

Site updates (11/19): Enough news accumulated to justify some tweaks here and there. The calendar page, theater show listings and monoblog have all had some fresh injections of hot-buttered information. Mostly though, things are quiet ... maybe it's just idle speculation, but it sure seems like the economy is casting a bit of a long shadow on many venues; fewer big names in the theaters and most places are only running on the weekends. WE NEED A BAILOUT!

New Open Mic (11/3): If you're looking for somewhere to celebrate the election, or for somewhere to feel better after the election, Mad Hatter has a new open mic starting on Wednesday. Just a friendly reminder.

News (10/7): Some tidbits to pass along. First, there are a few new open mics to report, one in Odenton and one in Arlington. Listings have been tacked onto the open mic page. Also, the DC Improv has tweaked one of its longstanding promotions: T-Shirt Tuesday is now T-Shirt Sunday. That means if you wear a DC Improv shirt (or hat) to the club on a Sunday and seats are still available, you get in free. Neat, huh?

Comedians (6/10): If you're active in the DC/Baltimore comedy scene (open mics / pro shows / etc.), why not get a listing on DC Standup? For $15 a year, you get to have your bio and contact info listed on a professional-looking site (and you can update as much as you like). It also puts your name on a roster that local bookers (and people seeking talent for private functions) scan on a regular basis. You get access to a bulletin board to tell people about your latest video, audio, and live comedy projects. PLUS your listing fee goes to cover the operating costs of the Web site, so that it can continue to be an informational resource for the whole area. If you're interested, e-mail chris@dcstandup.com for more information.

Improv Lounge (4/7): The DC Improv Lounge continues to be a popular rental space for local comics -- the Improv has updated the rental policy to answer a few more questions that potential renters might have. You can see the updated terms on the Lounge rental page. Dates are filling up so plan ahead, yo.

READING ROOM: On occasion we get humor pieces from comedians -- you can find them all archived in our Reading Room.
